A Rainy Garden Wedding in Belgium — South African Expats
PRINCESS
Rain is often the unexpected best man at a Belgian wedding.
This expat couple from South Africa chose their own picturesque garden for the celebration — a lush setting filled with blooming flowers and fruit trees. Just as the bride began her walk with her father toward the thoughtfully prepared canopy, a light drizzle suddenly turned into a steady downpour.
My assistant held an umbrella over me while I continued photographing the ceremony, capturing every moment as it unfolded.
The bride wore an exquisite beige gown, handmade by her own mother — a detail that made the day feel even more personal. Her elegant hairstyle was crowned with a delicate tiara, giving her the look of a modern-day princess, almost a fairytale figure. Shooting her portraits with a vintage lens felt especially natural, enhancing the timeless, dreamy quality of her presence.
As soon as the ceremony ended, the rain stopped — but the grass remained completely soaked. For the couple’s portraits, I was limited to a small carpeted area of the garden. And yet, despite the constraints, the session turned out beautifully — intimate, atmospheric, and full of character.
